Leh, Apr 14: Lieutenant Governor, Vinai Kumar Saxena has announced a series of major initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting tourism, and enhancing the overall quality of life in Ladakh.

Addressing a press conference, the LG said that cleanliness drives are currently underway in nine villages across Leh and Kargil, with local communities actively participating in plastic waste collection. The administration is also focusing on beautification efforts, including plantation, better lighting, and improved civic infrastructure.

A major highlight is the upcoming visit of the sacred relics of Gautama Buddha on February 28 and 29, which is expected to attract visitors from across the country and abroad. Authorities are working to ensure the event enhances Ladakh’s image as a global tourism destination.

In addition, preparations are in full swing for the Sindhu Mahakumbh festival scheduled on June 21, with restoration and beautification work ongoing at Sindhu Ghat. Ancient petroglyphs (rock carvings) will also be preserved and displayed as part of a new heritage initiative.

To support growing tourism, air connectivity has been significantly improved, with flights between Leh and Delhi increasing from 8 to 18 daily. A new terminal at Leh airport is also nearing completion and is expected to ease travel for visitors.

On the economic front, the administration is planning to promote exotic flower cultivation in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), aiming to generate employment and boost farmers’ income.

Highlighting key challenges, the LG said that urban management in Kargil, including parking, encroachment removal, and sewage treatment, will be a top priority. He also raised concerns about climate change, noting that Ladakh’s green cover is currently less than 1%, with plans to increase it significantly in the coming years.

Addressing healthcare gaps, the administration is considering encouraging private hospitals with a provision for free treatment to economically weaker sections.

Reiterating a strong stance on law enforcement, the LG emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against drug abuse and trafficking.

Overall, the administration aims to transform Ladakh into a clean, sustainable, and tourist-friendly region, while preserving its unique cultural and environmental heritage.
